A Weekend in Heilbronn - 48 Hours of Wine, experimenta and the Market Square

Heilbronn fits into two days - and is big enough to fill both of them. The city combines the oldest wine region in Württemberg with Germany's largest science center, the BUGA legacy of the Neckarbogen and a Renaissance market square. This 48-hour tour leads through all four anchor points.

Day 1 - Downtown + Wine

  1. 10:00

Market square with the art clock

Start at the Renaissance market square. The astronomical art clock of 1580 chimes its carillon on every full hour. Right next door: the Käthchen House with its Kleist romance.

  2. 11:00

    Climb St. Kilian's Church

The intricate Gothic west tower of St. Kilian's Church is Heilbronn's landmark. See the high altar by Hans Seyfer (1498) and climb to the tower platform.

  3. 12:30

    Lunch at the Ratskeller

Swabian classics beneath the town hall arcades - Maultaschen, lentils with Spätzle and Trollinger-braised beef.

  4. 14:30

    Wartberg climb + wine walk

From the Trappensee in the Oststadt, walk up through the Trollinger and Lemberger slopes to the Wartberg tower (308 m). A 360-degree panorama over Heilbronn and the surrounding hills.

  5. 17:00

Wartberg Restaurant or Café Schöne Aussichten

Sunset over the vineyards with a glass of Trollinger on the panorama terrace.

  6. 20:00

    Dinner at Weinstube Weigand

A hidden gem with a Swabian-Thai menu and the best wine list in the city.

Day 2 - experimenta + Neckarbogen

  1. 09:30

    experimenta

Germany's largest science center. 25,000 sq m, four themed worlds, more than 270 hands-on stations and the Science Dome (planetarium). Allow at least 3 hours.

  2. 13:00

    Lunch at Restaurant Delice (Insel-Hotel)

A gourmet restaurant on the Neckar island with modern cuisine and a curated wine list.

  3. 14:30

    A walk through the Neckarbogen

The BUGA 2019 legacy - floating houses on Lake Karls, promenades and an urban parkland on 40 hectares of former industrial land.

  4. 16:30

    Wine tasting at the Genossenschaftskellerei

A vinotheque with a tasting bar and a large wine shop. This is where you can buy Trollinger and Lemberger to take home.

  5. 18:00

Heading home / a finish at the Hafenmarkt Tower

A short detour to the Hafenmarkt Tower and Götzen Tower on the Neckar - Heilbronn's medieval defensive history to round things off.
